Celebrating Failure - Assignment 26

The second half of the spring semester and the summer term have been especially hard for me academically. I have found it hard to remain motivated and stay on track with my classes. I feel like I have failed this past semester.

1. I was taking STA 4321 during summer A for my statistics specialization. This class is hard because it is a lot of material covered in one lecture and it is hard to catch up if you miss a few. The style my professor was using to teach was not easy for me to retain the content. I had wanted to get a grade between an A-B+. The first test was really hard for me. I struggle with test anxiety and my head block during exams so for the first exam I was struggling a lot with anxiety and ended up getting a bad grade. After this exam I changed my study methods for the second test. I grasped the material a little better but still did not get the grade I hoped for. I adjusted my methods for the third test and I got the score I was aiming for. At the end of the semester I did not score in the range I wanted but ended up with a descent letter grade.

2. Even though I did not get the grade I wanted I learned how to adjust my study methods in order to improve my performance. This experience also helped me see what study methods work for me when I was learning remotely/online.

3. In general I have a hard time accepting failure but when I do I learn a lot from it and make necessary changes so I can succeed in the future. I usually don't talk about failure with anyone because I am embarrassed so sometimes I bottle in my emotions that come up when I fail I become super overwhelmed. At this point, I still have my reservations about taking huge risks because I do fear failure. I feel that my fear of failure has decreased over the past years because I have had to deal with failure and I have come through for myself and I have improved.

  1. Hey Maria, that goal is one that im sure many of us can not meet! It hard to manage classes, social life and family now that a lot of us are home. Usually I try to maintain my grades up while also juggling a job and its hard. I think it is important to also notice that you are setting a good goal for yourself! Congrats!!

  2. Hi Maria,
a friend on mine was also taking that class this semester and she was struggling a lot. She would always call me after the exams and tell me how challenging it was and how bummed out she was because she would study hard but still not do so well on the exams, you are not alone in the way you felt. I think the best we can do when dealing with failure is learning from it and move on to improve ourselves.

  3. Hey Maria!

Thank you so much for sharing your story with all of us. It takes a lot of confidence to speak about the issues and failures we have had in our lives. I really enjoyed reading your story and I think you have done a great job of identifying how you were able to overcome your fail and change it into something really positive. Thanks again for sharing, I really enjoyed reading you post.
