Reading Reflection No.2 - Assignment 21

How Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Scott Adams

1. In general the book talks about the "road to success". The author talks about goals/systems, risk taking and how to know yourself and do what you enjoy and are good at. Adams is the creator of the Dilbert cartoons, however before this huge success he had different jobs and experienced failure. The book focuses on how you have to create systems to develop habits instead of just setting a goal. The book also highlights the importance of knowing yourself and what you are good at and enjoy in order to know where to venture. You should take risks in something you know well, you would excel in, an area you are skilled in, etc.

2. I connected with this book because when coming up with ideas I choose areas that interest me, and that I know well. I also think that this book is important because rather than just setting goals, you have to create a system that you will use regularly to achieve more than just the set goal. For example, I currently have a system for all of my school work. I know that the ultimate goal is to complete all my school work but ultimately I don't set goals because I have my weekly routine in which I have daily tasks to complete everything I have to do. I think this book is important to read because it doesn't give you a blueprint to success for everyone, instead it helps you think about you and how you can use your abilities, your passions and your systems to achieve your own personal success.

3. The exercise that I would design would be to create a system for an aspect of your life. Once the system is put in place I would have the person reflect on how that system helped them accomplish in a week.

4. Honestly the biggest surprise from reading this book was the system argument. I would have expected the book to tell me to set goals and learn from how I achieved or didn't achieve these goals. I found that the system is something that we already use in our lives it just isn't something that I would have thought had such a big impact as I realized after reading the book.

  1. Hey Maria, I didn't read this book but it seems very interesting.I think its important to know how we unconsciously make decisions because we can learn from this and maybe try to change it in certain circumstances. Our decisions, no matter how little all have a big impact.I like that the book talked about the importance of knowing yourself!

  2. Hi Maria,
I actually chose the same book to write my reading reflection on. I also picked up on the concept of not setting goals but creating a system that will help you more than just creating an end goal. It creates better habits and it’s a more realistic idea of creating a path to achieve a goal. Overall, you seemed to really take away an important lesson from the book! Thanks for sharing!
